Consider interest of country first, Jonathan tells politicians

Pesident Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday in New York urged politician to put the nation’s interest first in all their activities to ensure progress and speedy development of the country.Janathan made the remark at a meeting with Nigerian living in the U.S.

State House Photo.

“Politicians should consider the interest of the country first before their own and as patriots they should not burn the building down because as stakeholders they have the interest of living there.

Jonathan said the constitution provides for a four year term and a maximum of eight years term limit for elected executive office holders in the country.

The president noted that the governors like other executive office holders have an eight years limit, explaining that at the end of an election, the elected person or persons should be given the opportunity to do the work assigned to them by the constitution.

“You must allow the person that emerges to work,’’ he said, ’

He, however, stressed that a situation where some voters did not vote for the winner or winners should not give them the  impetus to impede the work of the administration in power.

“You must allow the person that emerges to do work in an atmosphere of peace for the growth of the country,’’ the said,

On security, Jonathan said that before now, the major security challenge facing the nation was armed robbery, but that with time terrorism had emerged as the major challenge taking the nation by surprise.

He, however, stressed that the challenge of terrorism is being seriously tackled by the government.

“I appreciate that we have a serious security challenge with Boko Haram insurgency. this is the area where the government is being blackmailed, but by the grace of God this will soon be a thing of the past .

“Before now it was robbery, until terrorism took us by surprise. Soon it will be a thing of the past,’’ Jonathan stressed.

Jonathan, noted that the privatisation of public facilities under the administration is carried out transparently adding that   so far three billion dollars has been realised without any form of corruption compared to the privatisation that took place in the past.

“In the country’s past privatisation, we know what happened there and yet those who sat over the exercise are the same people who are opening their mouth wide to attack this administration,’’ the president told the gathering.

On Nigerians in Diaspora, the president acknowledged that they had excelled in their respective professions in the U.S., stressing “Nigerians in Diaspora are an important group particularly those in the U.S.”.

According to him, the administration needs them to work in different areas of Nigerian economy.

“ You do not have to relocate to Nigeria to make the necessary impact, you can come and establish businesses to create jobs for your brothers and sisters at home,’’ Jonathan said.

The coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in her remarks said that

the country’s economy was growing stronger, noting that the Jonathan’s transformation agenda is helping the economy.

She said that government had created jobs to reduce the unemployment rate in the country since its assumption of office about two and half years ago and will continue to expand the drive.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Aganga, noted that the nation’s budget deficit was less than two per cent, explaining that the government had embraced fiscal discipline to manage the economy better.

Aganga also said that Nigeria is a high growth and high return nation, indicating that Nigeria is ranked fourth as an investment destination nation.

Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S., Prof. Ade Adefuye said that election of the president was God’s intervention in the affairs of the country.

Adefuye added that Jonathan’s administration had brought a paradigm shift in Nigeria, by putting the right people in key positions in driving the affairs of the country in the right direction and internationally acceptable standards.

The ambassador also commended the president for ensuring that Nigerians abroad who have done well are brought back into the system.

“This is the first government that has made it possible for Nigerians abroad to tap into governance,’’ he said.

“It is thoughtful of President Goodluck Jonathan to seek the inputs of Nigerian professionals from various fields on how to facilitate and speed up development in Nigeria.

“I thank him for recognising the fact that those of us in the Diaspora have enormous skills that we can employ to enhance development in the country.

“President Jonathan’s pledge to involve Nigerians in the Diaspora, particularly those in the U.S., in nation-building is highly commendable,’’ Dr Acho Orabuchi, an educationist living in the U.S.said.

Awoonor’s death,shocking — Ghanaian President (Kenyan attack)

Ghana’s President John Mahama has described the death of Ghanaian writer, Prof. Kofi Awoonor, in the Kenya mall terrorist attack as shocking.

This is contained in a reaction by the president posted on his Facebook wall.

“I am shocked to hear the death of Prof. Awoonor in the Nairobi Mall terrorist attack. This is a great loss to Ghana. He will be sorely missed by Ghanaians, family, friends and our party; the National Democratic Congress,’’ the president said.

Gunmen on Saturday opened fire at an upscale Nairobi mall, killing, at least, 68 persons and injuring many others.

Kenyan police authorities have been widely quoted as describing the incident as a terrorist attack.

Meanwhile, Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has pledged to track down the perpetrators of the attack, which he described as `heinous and senseless’.

Kenyatta was quoted in a statement as describing Awonor’s death in the attack as a huge loss to Africa.

“We shall hunt down the perpetrators wherever they run to, we shall get them, we shall punish them for this heinous crime,’’ the president said.

Awoonor, born in March 1935, was a renowned Ghanaian poet and author of international repute.

His works combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people as well as contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa’s decolonisation.

Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham: Giroud strike downs big-spending Spurs

The French striker could be under threat should Arsene Wenger manage to bring in a marquee forward, but he proved his worth yet again with a fine goal to win the derby.

Olivier Giroud scored his second goal in as many Premier League matches as Arsenal overcame Tottenham 1-0 in the north London derby on Sunday.

The France international struck the only goal of the game midway through the first half after cleverly clipping home Theo Walcott's low cross.

Arsenal made two changes to the side that beat Fulham 3-1 last week, with Laurent Koscielny and Jack Wilshere coming in for Bacary Sagna and the injured Lukas Podolski, while new signing Mathieu Flamini – in his second spell with the club – was named on the bench.

Erik Lamela was among the Tottenham substitutes, although fellow new additions Vlad Chiriches and Christian Eriksen were not included in the squad.

Arsenal seized the early momentum almost immediately and twice came close to going ahead in the opening five minutes. Santi Cazorla forced Hugo Lloris into a fine save with a curling free kick before shooting narrowly wide from another set-piece shortly after.

The hosts' dominance looked to have come to an end as Tottenham began to dictate the game and press forward.

However, Andre Villas-Boas' men were undone on the counter-attack after 23 minutes, with Giroud meeting a low near-post cross from Theo Walcott to prod home from point-blank range.

Sturridge spoils Moyes’s Merseyside return

first visit to Anfield with Manchester United ended in defeat on Sunday as Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool a 1-0 victory for the third Premier League game running.

Moyes was without Wayne Rooney due to a head injury that looks set to rule him out of England’s forthcoming World Cup qualifiers and in his absence, the Scot’s poor record at Liverpool continued.

Sturridge, who could benefit from Rooney’s absence for England against Moldova and Ukraine, scored the only goal in the fourth minute, having also been the match-winner in the 1-0 wins over Stoke City and Aston Villa.

His early header means Liverpool are the only team to have won their opening three fixtures, although Tottenham Hotspur could match them if they prevail at north London derby rivals Arsenal later on Sunday.

“It is a great win for our belief,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

“Last season we drew too many of the big games and we lost both times to Manchester United, but today was another marker for us and since January our form has been very, very good.”

Although the season remains young, it was a painful defeat for United, who already trail their old rivals by five points.

“I thought we played really well,” said United manager Moyes, who revealed after the game that Rooney could be out for three weeks.

“We had long periods of the game, but couldn’t score. Apart from the lapse in concentration for their goal, we played well.

“We got two or three opportunities but it was unfortunate we didn’t take them.”

The game was preceded by a minute’s applause for the late Bill Shankly, who would have turned 100 on Monday, and the legendary former Liverpool manager would have appreciated his side’s purposeful start.

There were less than four minutes on the clock when Liverpool struck, with Sturridge stepping off the line to glance Daniel Agger’s header past David de Gea and mark his 24th birthday with an 11th goal in nine games.

Initially, United struggled to react, and Robin van Persie’s frustration told late in the half when he was booked for flying in on Daniel Agger before angrily clashing with Martin Skrtel.

United also lost Phil Jones to an apparent ankle injury before half-time, but there was a renewed determination to their play in the second period.

Ashley Young had a volley blocked by Glen Johnson and Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had to field a Ryan Giggs header before parrying a rasping shot from substitute Nani.

Johnson hobbled off for Liverpool after hurting himself in a block tackle but the hosts survived, with Van Persie spurning a good late chance by slashing wide of the near post in the 87th minute.

In the day’s other lunchtime game, Swansea City recorded their first victory of the season with a 2-0 success at West Bromwich Albion.

The home side recalled Nicolas Anelka after he was granted compassionate leave due to the death of a close friend, but they lost to a 22nd-minute Ben Davies volley and a late Pablo Hernandez strike.

44 killed by gunmen in mosque

Gunmen have killed 44 people inside a mosque, in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, officials say.

The killings took place during dawn prayers on Sunday morning, although news only emerged on Monday. The attack occurred in Konduga in Borno state, 35km (22 miles) from the state capital Maiduguri.

About 26 people were also injured. They were receiving treatment in Maiduguri.

It was not clear who was responsible for the shootings.

But the Boko Haram militants remain the chief suspects.

The Islamist group Boko Haram has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.

A member of a civilian vigilante group told the Associated Press that four of their number were killed when they responded to calls for help.

Twelve further civilians were killed at Ngom village, closer to Maiduguri, reports say.

Army arrests 42 Boko Haram members

Nigerian Army, yesterday, in Lagos, paraded 42 suspected members of Boko Haram sect arrested in their hideouts in Lagos and Ogun states.

Some of the paraded suspects confessed to have killed soldiers and civilians in the northern parts of the country.

They also confessed to have fled Borno State for the western part of the country following the ongoing military intervention.

Parading the suspects before newsmen, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Obi Umahi, stated that the suspects were arrested following intelligence report on the migration of some members of the sect to the South, from the operation’s commander in the South-Eastern part of the country.

He said based on this information at the division’s disposal, a coordinated raid was carried out in some criminal hideouts in both states.

He said: “The Command organised and carried out raids in conjunction with intelligence operatives in various parts of these states.

“The Boko Haram members’ influx is adduced to plans to unleash terror in some parts of South-West, which includes 81 Division’s area of responsibility.

“The raids were conducted from 12 to 23 July in various hideouts in Lagos and Ogun states, which are fast becoming Boko Haram enclaves.

“The raids were conducted in Ibafo trailer parks and Ileke new trailer garage in Ogun State; Aviation quarters, Mafoluku Oshodi, Ketu/Mile 12 motor parks, Orile trailer park, Lekki new extension and Bar Beach in Lagos State, where 42 suspects were arrested.

“They all admitted to be members of the sect and also said they had participated in some deadly Boko Haram operations.

Athletics in drug crisis after sprint stars Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell test positive for banned substances

Former world 100 metre record holder Asafa Powell confirmed on Sunday that he had failed a drugs test which will keep him out of the upcoming World Championships in Moscow.

Jamaican star Powell was the second leading sprinter on Sunday to fail a dope test following America’s former world champion Tyson Gay.

I will confirm that a sample I gave at the National Trials in June has returned ‘adverse findings’,” said the 30-year-old Powell in a statement released on his Twitter account.

“The substance oxilofrine was found, which is considered by the authorities to be a banned stimulant.”

The failed test means Powell is out of the Worlds which will take place in Moscow between August 10-18.

Powell went on to vehemently deny he had ever knowingly taken any illegal performance-enhancing drugs.
“I want to be clear…that I have never knowingly or wilfully taken any supplements or substances that break any rules,” Powell wrote. “I am not now nor have I ever been a cheat.”

He added: “This finding fully negates any possibility of me being a part of Jamaica’s contingent of athletes competing at the World Championships in Moscow later this summer.

“I have accepted the consequences that come with this finding — after all there is only one Asafa Powell.”

Powell, who runs for the MVP Track and Field Club, said he has been in contact with both anti-doping agencies and law enforcement officials about the matter. He did not go into detail about what role law enforcement is taking.

“We are co-operating with the relevant agencies and law enforcement authorities to discover how the substance got into my system,” said Powell, who held the 100 metre world record between June 2005 and May 2008.

Powell has won two bronze medals (2007, 2009) in the 100 metres at the World Championships. He also had one gold in the 4×100 metre relay (2009) and a silver in the 2007 relay at the Worlds.

Powell says he plans to hold his own investigation to try and figure out how the banned substance got into his system.

“I assure you that we will find out how this substance passed our rigorous internal checks and balances and design systems to make sure it never happens again.”

Powell is one of the fastest men in history to never have won an individual Olympic medal.

He finished in last place in the 100 metres at the 2012 London Games, well behind compatriot Usain Bolt with a disappointing time of 11.99 seconds, blaming the performance on a nagging groin injury.

He had back-to-back fifth place finishes in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympic 100 metre finals. Powell was a member of the USA’s gold medal winning 4×100 relay team at the Beijing Games.

According to media reports, Powell was one of five athletes who failed drug tests at the national trials last month in Kingston.

Sherone Simpson, a silver medallist in the women’s 100m at the 2008 Olympics, was one of them, according to a report in Britain’s Daily Telegraph.

The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper claimed the substance taken may have been contained in a food supplement.

“My team and I will try to do everything we can to get this issue dealt with as best as we can,” Simpson told the Gleaner.
“Thanks to all who have been supporting me, I really appreciate it at this time.

David Moyes may well have to change his transfer plans as Thiago Alcantara has told Barcelona he would prefer a move to Bayern Munich over Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho has insisted he is a better manager than when he first arrived in England, as he embarks on his second spell in charge of Chelsea.

The Portuguese said his time in charge of Inter Milan and Real Madrid has given him a wealth of experience that will only benefit him on his return to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City will try and land PSG star Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a cut-price deal, after missing out on Edinson Cavani.

The Sweden international could be available for as little as £17million this summer, but Real Madrid are also in the hunt.

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to put together a deal for want-away Aston Villa striker Chrstian Benteke, but are refusing to meet the Villains asking price of £25million.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will table an offer in the region of £20million for the 22-year-old, despite Villa’s stance that any bid under their valuation will be dismissed immediately.

SOLDIERS DEPLOYED TO RIVERS ASSEMBLY

TROOPS from the Joint Task Force  were deployed  in   Rivers State House of Assembly on Wednesday to prevent a bloody clash between supporters of Governor  Rotimi Amaechi and those of the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike,  in Port Harcourt.

Both groups, comprising mainly youths and those believed to be ex-militants, had gathered at the  Assembly at about 7.30am to witness the sitting of the lawmakers and to know  who would be recognised as the Speaker.

Policemen on the ground at Assembly  watched as the youthS argued on the disagreement between the governor and Wike, but a team of JTF operatives, who came in four Hilux vehicles, dispersed them within 10 minutes.

The soldiers fired    tear-gas  canisters,  forcing some  of the protesting youths  to  relocate to the front of the Government House.

An ex-militant, who was among the youths  was arrested by the  riot policemen and taken to the Swift Operation Squad, ostensibly for interrogation. An identification card with an  inscription ‘Amnesty’ was found in his pocket.

One of the pro-Wike youths, Kennedy Mbiere, who spoke with The  PUNCH, said they were not happy with the way the state government  disrupted the process of  inuagurating  Mr. Evans Bipi as the new  speaker of the Assembly on Tuesday.

Mbiere  said they were at the Assembly complex  to show solidarity with  Bipi,  arguing   that the governor should not have been there (Assembly)   on Tuesday to prevent an elected Bipi from being  inaugurated.
Also, a pro-Amaechi supporter, who identified himself as Tonye, lamented the interference of Abuja politicians in the affairs of the state.

“In a democracy, is it possible for five members to impeach the Speaker  of a state House of Assembly  with  32 members? We will not allow that. We are prepared to die than allow that to happen in Rivers State, ” Tonye  said.

Police fire tear-gas canisters
Some of the  youths numbering over 1, 000   had moved to the Government House from the   Assembly at about 12.30pm to show solidarity with  Amaechi but they were teargassed by policemen.

Some  scampered for safety at nearby kiosks and houses while others   ran into the Government House where they were later addressed by  Deputy Governor, Mr. Tele Ikuru.

The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, accused the police of  firing teargas canisters  into the Government House, describing the action  as unfortunate.

Semenitari expressed surprise that teargas canisters  could be fired into a Government House in a democracy, thereby disrupting  business  even in the Executive chambers.

Protest ban still in Place – CP
Earlier, the  Commissioner of Police, Mr.  Joseph Mbu, warned that the ban on any form of protests and processions was still in place.

Mbu, who spoke through the   Police Public relations Officer of the State Police Command, Mrs. Angela Agabe, restated that the police  would not tolerate a situation whereby any person would embark on a protest without seeking approval.

Meanwhile, the  Assembly has described as false,  the allegation that  Mr. Otelemaba Amachree  had been impeached as its  Speaker.

A statement  by 26 out of the 32 members of the Assembly on Wednesday read, “We state for the benefit of the public that no such situation existed on the floor of the Assembly on  July 9 , 2013. These are mere machinations of the five members desperate to do their masters bidding.

“The purported claim by a member of the Assembly,    Bipi, to be the new speaker of the state Assembly is false and a hallucinations of the most debased form. We urge members of the public and the press to disregard such claims.”

ACN  calls for Jonathan’s impeachment
Meanwhile, the  Action Congress of Nigeria  has blamed President Goodluck Jonathan for the crisis in  the  state  and called on the  National Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against  him.

The party, in a statement  by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, alleged that  Jonathan had failed to live up to his oath of office to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The ACN said, “Under his watch, five lawmakers – out of 32 – have become the majority and, simply because they have the backing of the Presidency, are now being given police protection to disrupt the proceedings of the Assembly.

“As we write, Rivers State has been taken over by current and former militants, who have been unleashed to destabilise the state and cause a breakdown of law and order, to pave the way for the imposition of a state of emergency.

”This cannot and must not be allowed to continue, hence our call on the National Assembly to move quickly to remove the source of the crisis.”
The ACN stated that because of the potential  to set the country on fire, it  was calling  on civil society groups, professional bodies and ordinary Nigerians to  defend the rule of law and the supremacy of the constitution.

It recalled that under Jonathan’s watch and with his tacit support, a few lawmakers dictated to majority of the members of the Ogun State House of Assembly.

The party  stated that under  Jonathan’s watch, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum was sabotaged by his minions who declared a governor with 16 votes a winner over the one who scored 19 votes.

It said that the five lawmakers were emboldened to take extra-constitutional measures to try to remove the majority-backed speaker of the   Assembly.

Count President out of Crisis- Gulak
However, the Presidency has enjoined opposition parties and others who believe that  Jonathan was the unseen hand in the Rivers State brouhaha to discountenance such idea.

The Presidency gave the advice through two of Jonathan’s aides – Dr. Ahmed Gulak  and Dr. Okupe – in separate interviews with  our correspondents in Abuja.

Gulak, who is the President’s Special Adviser   on Political Matters,  said  Amaechi should learn to face his problem and  face the   Assembly problem  squarely without dragging the   President into it.

Amaechi too small, says Okupe

On his part, Okupe, who is the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, said Jonathan could not have engineered the Rivers crisis  because Amaechi was too small for him to fight.

He said, “The President has no hand in what is happening in the state. The President is not fighting Amaechi. He (the governor) is too small an entity for the President to fight.

“That (fight) has not happened; it cannot happen and it will not happen. What is going on in the state is the reaction of the people and maybe they are not happy  because of his disposition to the President or the Presidency or his party (the Peoples Democratic Party).”

On  ACN’s  call for impeachment, Okupe described it as “another condemnable, extremist and fundamentally flawed position by the opposition party.”
Okupe added, “For the avoidance of doubt and at the risk of repetitiveness, we wish to state categorically that in spite of what the ACN will want the Nigerian people to believe, President   Jonathan is absolutely unconnected and definitely not involved in the political crisis that seemed to have engulfed Rivers State in recent times.

“The President is not, has not and will never engineer any act that can cause disaffection between Governor  Amaechi or any other governor and the state legislature or any other institution of government.”
Also, the leadership of the PDP  condemned   the ACN’s  claim  and asked lovers of democracy to discountenance it.

PDP Acting National Publicity Secretary,   Tony Okeke, described the ACN statement  as “malicious and the height of political irresponsibility”.

The ruling party accused the opposition of seeking to aggravate the situation in Rivers State for selfish reasons.

Celeb Dairy: DR Congo’s Baddest Boy, Fally Ipupa. Style and Dance Completes This Man

Cool, Sexy, handsome, fresh, rich, famous and Stylish are those words we all use to describe this one man who has come to dazzle majority of the world’s men, women; young and old and yeah, even Eve, D’banj, J. Martins and former G-Unit queen, Olivia. His name is Fally Ipupa; one of DR.Congo’s most famous faces. But how did he rise so fast on top that we can’t even remember where and when we first saw him?

Let’s save Fally’s childhood and educational background for another day. After all, that’s not why we are here now. This guy has mesmerized most of us with his profound respect for style and fashion and we just wonder how and why he gets it right every time. Does he sleep, eat, drink, smoke and laugh out fashion?

There is just something about him that works, yeah that’s called charisma. He’s got loads of it and he never fails to pour that into his outfits. He trends the most expensive designs: Louis Vitton, Versace, Sean John and rocks the ice too!

Who else could pull off a 765 pounds leopard print ponyskin Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers or a gold slipper away from home like Fally? But he did! He stepped into Nigeria through music collaboration with Singer, J. Martins in ‘Jupa Remix’ but has certainly remained in the industry years after just because his clothes, blings, voice and dance moves couldn’t be forgotten in a hurry.

He wears it all, corporate, streetz, hip, casual etc and never fails. He talks less and shows off a great deal. From tight fitted jeans to leggings, well-tailored trousers to fitted shirts and loose Ts, Fally rocks it at best! That takes us to his physique. Need I tell y’all how gracious his packs are or how pink his lips look or how fresh and clean he smells or how much he loves shades? There seem to be no mistake about this dude and that’s exactly how he affects his crowd…no mistakes!

His special waist dance from home hypnotizes his audience. He brings it on stage just fine and in whatever outfit, dude is flexible. Where did he get that from? He’s been dancing ever since he was a kid for sure and has evolved over the years by dancing with super star, Koffi Olumide. From then, he vanished for over three years and resurfaced a refined artist and he’s never stopped rising ever since!

At this point, we don’t know how to rate him; on his fashion or his dance? Fally Ipupa rocks anything ‘rockable’ and isn’t ashamed of taking fashion risks. He goes to the edge and leaves no stone unturned. he breathes a sense of fresh air into the fashion world and his ‘Sexy Dance‘ is doing magic in the lives of his fans and …why not enemies?

DR Congo is certainly very proud of this particular breed and Africa has fallen in love. There won’t be any break up soon, rest assured!
