Tinubu—FG planning to arrest APC leaders

NATIONAL Leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday, said Federal Government was planning to arrest leaders of his party ahead of Saturday’s election.

Declaring that he was ready for arrest, Tinubu, who spoke at the 7th Annual Bola Tinubu Colloquium in Lagos to mark his 63rd birthday, said the plot will not silence him.

Insisting that APC had a better ticket in Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) and Professor Yemi Osinbajo than the President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo team of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Tinubu said despite the postponement of the polls by six weeks, President Jonathan will still lose the election.

According to him the postponement is “a stay of execution for Jonathan administration.”

The event was attended by a galaxy of APC leaders and stalwarts, including National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun; former Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Governor of Ekiti and Osun states. Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Segun Oni, respectively; wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs Olufunsho Amosun; mother of the Vice Presidential candidate, Mrs Bisi Osinbajo; Prof Pat Utomi and Chief Lanre Rasaq.

Tinubu spoke as Governor Aregbesola accused President Jonathan of starving governors of funds just as Governor Fashola said the President lied on his achievements in the last five years.

Buhari reacts

Speaking at the event, Buhari said the seamless manner APC merger was consummated and the pedigree and long-time service of the leaders will yield electoral dividends for the party.

He said: “This was possible because of their personal service in their constituencies. They have served people so much that they have developed so much confidence in them.

“Though there have been previous mergers but they never materialized. And the most interesting thing is that we looked at the opposition parties, and we realized that none of them can compete with PDP.

“And during the merger, some of the parties had court cases that could delay the merger. So we constituted committees in each of the parties and they provided their terms of references. And I was told by Chief Bisi Akande that some of the parties are demanding for certain positions. But I said that the most important thing is that the merger must works. And after that, we will sit down and decide on each demand.

“All my previous attempt to defeat PDP ended up at the Supreme Court. But with this merger, we have done the right job. With the merger, we are witnessing progresses and come Saturday, we will succeed at the polls by God’s grace.”

Why I can’t pay salaries – Aregbesola

Aregbesola attributed his delay in the payment of five months’ salary arrears to Osun civil servants to “the economic strategy adopted by President Jonathan to shrink the monthly revenue of the state.”

Aregbesola lamented that the economic policy of the Federal Government had forced the state to take a loan of N12 billion from banks.

His words: “The reason for indicting the President was that when I assumed office in 2010, I met a state with an income of N2.1 billion and with a wage bill of N1.1 billion.

“Outside Lagos, Osun State is the next state with large number of civil servants under the state employ. By 2012 January, my wage bill jumped to N3.6 billion and at this time, the revenue of the state had increased to N4.6 billion.

Central government

“And do not forget that the state inherited 50 percent of the entire civil servants in the old Western states. But by July of 2013, the apex government announced an unusual decline in allocation to the state which was about 40 percent. So from N4.6 billion with which I could meet the wage need of the workers, the revenue of the state from the central government was reduced to N2.6 billion.

“Since then, the highest monthly allocation received by the government was in November 2013 and it was N3 billion. And since then, Osun State had to augment salaries. Sometimes, N600 million, N1 billion and N1.6 billion.”

On his part, Fashola said President Jonathan lied over the achievements recorded by his administration since 2011, when he was sworn-in.

He said: “As I was reading the newspaper this morning, I saw an advert published by President Goodluck Jonathan, where he listed as part of his achievements the ongoing construction of the Adiyan Phase 11 water works and the N40 billion loan for education, which the central government underwrote for Lagos State through the EKO project.

“The president claimed that they have fixed the Airport Road and built Primary Health care Centres in Lagos State. Those who use the PHC know the people you see there. There are many other things that were also said in the advertorial. That advert is a lie.

Lagos State government under my administration is the one building the waterworks. If the President wants to lie in order to win election, it is a very low point for the presidential election.

Assertion of APC on Jonathan spending N1trn on campaigns

All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organization, APC, Monday, the allegation led on President Goodluck Jonathan of shifting N1 trillion from the public coffers to fund his campaigns of buying over traditional rulers and some major interest groups.

The APCPCO also said part of the money was also being used in funding what it described as the hate campaign launched against the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, General Mohammadu Buhari.

The accusation was immediately rebuffed by the Jonathan campaign yesterday which accused the Buhari campaign of being gripped with fear of losing the election.

The APCPCO regretted that President Jonathan who should ensure accelerated development of the country with its resources had gone on a wild goose chase, disparaging Buhari and squandering the resources of the nation in a bid to win the election.

Director, Media and Publicity of the Buhari campaign, Mallam Garba Shehu while asking Nigerians to think twice before voting this Saturday, said that Jonathan should have resorted to showcasing his legacies in office instead of sharing money.

“We will like to bring to your attention and that of Nigerians how the President Goodluck Jonathan led Peoples Democratic Party government is wasting one trillion Naira that belong to Nigerian people in his self-serving and desperate bid for a re-election at all cost in the midst of grinding poverty his party and government has subjected Nigerians to in the last 16 years.

“It is unconscionable and height of betrayal of public trust that a government and a President who should preside over the husbandry and judicious use of our national patrimony is superintending over its massive squander in a futile attempt to stop the idea of change. Let us sound a note of warning at this point that no amount of sponsored negative media propaganda can stop this idea whose time has come.

“The APC Presidential Campaign and the acceptability of our candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice Presidential Candidate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has become a peoples’ movement and Nigerian masses who are the drivers of change are the major stakeholders.

“A panoramic view of how much Nigeria’s resources Jonathan and PDP have laboriously and wantonly spent on print, broadcast and social media campaigns just to damage the unassailable credential of Gen Buhari’s integrity will confound any casual observer of the polity in recent times.

“An average cost of a wrap around in Tier 1 and Tier 2 newspapers in Nigeria is between N15 million to N20 million and the Jonathan campaign buys average of 5 wrap around and front pages in a day in the last 3 months coupled with the hundreds of billions that have been spent on negative TV exposures on AIT, NTA and other television and radio stations across the country.

“We had expected that a President that has spent about 6 years in office with the revenues more than what all governments before him had received will run on a record of performance rather than peddling lies and hate media campaigns that are accentuating ethnic and religious tensions in the country.”

Shehu also stated that Jonathan had spent handsomely on traditional rulers in the south west, revealing that the presidential financial train had now moved to the north.

According to him, the monies expended on PDP campaigns could provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.

“President Jonathan has been criss-crossing Nigeria giving an average of N50 million each to traditional rulers, most especially in the South West and the Northern parts of Nigeria. This week, the President’s campaign money is being shipped to the North.

“You  will recall that a Pastor recently confirmed that N7 billion was given to Pastors to spread unfounded allegations of Islamaphobia and scare mongering against Gen Buhari and other APC leaders.

“A fraction of the trillion naira hate campaign expenditure will fund the APC programme of feeding primary school pupils in Nigeria on one nutritional meal a day, comfortably pay N5000 monthly to 25 million very poor Nigerians for a year and pay unemployment benefit for one year for graduates who can’t find gainful employment one year after NYSC which are core to the social welfare programmes of the APC Federal government Gen Buhari will lead.

Reacting to the allegations last night the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, PDPPCO spent over one trillion naira of Nigeria’s tax payers’ money on media and  to bribe traditional rulers especially in the South West, Director, Media and Publicity, PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani- Kayode described the APC of being gripped by the fear of losing Saturday’s general election.

Fani-Kayode who noted that  very little of what APC says worries the party, said that  the allegation was evident that the party has lost touch with reality.

He said, “They are afraid of losing. The president of this country does not give bribe; we do not believe that traditional rulers in this country, especially those in South West are bribe takers.

“They also said money was given to pastors. That is a lie. No pastor of the living God, no pastor worth his salt is a bribe taker.

Consider interest of country first, Jonathan tells politicians

Pesident Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday in New York urged politician to put the nation’s interest first in all their activities to ensure progress and speedy development of the country.Janathan made the remark at a meeting with Nigerian living in the U.S.

JONATHAN IN US—From left: Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof Adebowele Adefuye; Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof Joy Ogwu; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof Viola Onwuliri, welcoming President Goodluck Jonathan and the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan at the Jfk International Aiport, for the 68th session of the Un General Assembly in New York, yesterday. State House Photo.

“Politicians should consider the interest of the country first before their own and as patriots they should not burn the building down because as stakeholders they have the interest of living there.

Jonathan said the constitution provides for a four year term and a maximum of eight years term limit for elected executive office holders in the country.

The president noted that the governors like other executive office holders have an eight years limit, explaining that at the end of an election, the elected person or persons should be given the opportunity to do the work assigned to them by the constitution.

“You must allow the person that emerges to work,’’ he said, ’

He, however, stressed that a situation where some voters did not vote for the winner or winners should not give them the  impetus to impede the work of the administration in power.

“You must allow the person that emerges to do work in an atmosphere of peace for the growth of the country,’’ the said,

On security, Jonathan said that before now, the major security challenge facing the nation was armed robbery, but that with time terrorism had emerged as the major challenge taking the nation by surprise.

He, however, stressed that the challenge of terrorism is being seriously tackled by the government.

“I appreciate that we have a serious security challenge with Boko Haram insurgency. this is the area where the government is being blackmailed, but by the grace of God this will soon be a thing of the past .

“Before now it was robbery, until terrorism took us by surprise. Soon it will be a thing of the past,’’ Jonathan stressed.

Jonathan, noted that the privatisation of public facilities under the administration is carried out transparently adding that   so far three billion dollars has been realised without any form of corruption compared to the privatisation that took place in the past.

“In the country’s past privatisation, we know what happened there and yet those who sat over the exercise are the same people who are opening their mouth wide to attack this administration,’’ the president told the gathering.

On Nigerians in Diaspora, the president acknowledged that they had excelled in their respective professions in the U.S., stressing “Nigerians in Diaspora are an important group particularly those in the U.S.”.

According to him, the administration needs them to work in different areas of Nigerian economy.

“ You do not have to relocate to Nigeria to make the necessary impact, you can come and establish businesses to create jobs for your brothers and sisters at home,’’ Jonathan said.

The coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in her remarks said that

the country’s economy was growing stronger, noting that the Jonathan’s transformation agenda is helping the economy.

She said that government had created jobs to reduce the unemployment rate in the country since its assumption of office about two and half years ago and will continue to expand the drive.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Aganga, noted that the nation’s budget deficit was less than two per cent, explaining that the government had embraced fiscal discipline to manage the economy better.

Aganga also said that Nigeria is a high growth and high return nation, indicating that Nigeria is ranked fourth as an investment destination nation.

Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S., Prof. Ade Adefuye said that election of the president was God’s intervention in the affairs of the country.

Adefuye added that Jonathan’s administration had brought a paradigm shift in Nigeria, by putting the right people in key positions in driving the affairs of the country in the right direction and internationally acceptable standards.

The ambassador also commended the president for ensuring that Nigerians abroad who have done well are brought back into the system.

“This is the first government that has made it possible for Nigerians abroad to tap into governance,’’ he said.

“It is thoughtful of President Goodluck Jonathan to seek the inputs of Nigerian professionals from various fields on how to facilitate and speed up development in Nigeria.

“I thank him for recognising the fact that those of us in the Diaspora have enormous skills that we can employ to enhance development in the country.

“President Jonathan’s pledge to involve Nigerians in the Diaspora, particularly those in the U.S., in nation-building is highly commendable,’’ Dr Acho Orabuchi, an educationist living in the U.S.said.

Awoonor’s death,shocking — Ghanaian President (Kenyan attack)

Ghana’s President John Mahama has described the death of Ghanaian writer, Prof. Kofi Awoonor, in the Kenya mall terrorist attack as shocking.

This is contained in a reaction by the president posted on his Facebook wall.

“I am shocked to hear the death of Prof. Awoonor in the Nairobi Mall terrorist attack. This is a great loss to Ghana. He will be sorely missed by Ghanaians, family, friends and our party; the National Democratic Congress,’’ the president said.

Gunmen on Saturday opened fire at an upscale Nairobi mall, killing, at least, 68 persons and injuring many others.

Kenyan police authorities have been widely quoted as describing the incident as a terrorist attack.

Meanwhile, Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has pledged to track down the perpetrators of the attack, which he described as `heinous and senseless’.

Kenyatta was quoted in a statement as describing Awonor’s death in the attack as a huge loss to Africa.

“We shall hunt down the perpetrators wherever they run to, we shall get them, we shall punish them for this heinous crime,’’ the president said.

Awoonor, born in March 1935, was a renowned Ghanaian poet and author of international repute.

His works combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people as well as contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa’s decolonisation.

Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham: Giroud strike downs big-spending Spurs

The French striker could be under threat should Arsene Wenger manage to bring in a marquee forward, but he proved his worth yet again with a fine goal to win the derby.

Olivier Giroud scored his second goal in as many Premier League matches as Arsenal overcame Tottenham 1-0 in the north London derby on Sunday.

The France international struck the only goal of the game midway through the first half after cleverly clipping home Theo Walcott's low cross.

Arsenal made two changes to the side that beat Fulham 3-1 last week, with Laurent Koscielny and Jack Wilshere coming in for Bacary Sagna and the injured Lukas Podolski, while new signing Mathieu Flamini – in his second spell with the club – was named on the bench.

Erik Lamela was among the Tottenham substitutes, although fellow new additions Vlad Chiriches and Christian Eriksen were not included in the squad.

Arsenal seized the early momentum almost immediately and twice came close to going ahead in the opening five minutes. Santi Cazorla forced Hugo Lloris into a fine save with a curling free kick before shooting narrowly wide from another set-piece shortly after.

The hosts' dominance looked to have come to an end as Tottenham began to dictate the game and press forward.

However, Andre Villas-Boas' men were undone on the counter-attack after 23 minutes, with Giroud meeting a low near-post cross from Theo Walcott to prod home from point-blank range.

Sturridge spoils Moyes’s Merseyside return

first visit to Anfield with Manchester United ended in defeat on Sunday as Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool a 1-0 victory for the third Premier League game running.

Moyes was without Wayne Rooney due to a head injury that looks set to rule him out of England’s forthcoming World Cup qualifiers and in his absence, the Scot’s poor record at Liverpool continued.

Sturridge, who could benefit from Rooney’s absence for England against Moldova and Ukraine, scored the only goal in the fourth minute, having also been the match-winner in the 1-0 wins over Stoke City and Aston Villa.

His early header means Liverpool are the only team to have won their opening three fixtures, although Tottenham Hotspur could match them if they prevail at north London derby rivals Arsenal later on Sunday.

“It is a great win for our belief,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

“Last season we drew too many of the big games and we lost both times to Manchester United, but today was another marker for us and since January our form has been very, very good.”

Although the season remains young, it was a painful defeat for United, who already trail their old rivals by five points.

“I thought we played really well,” said United manager Moyes, who revealed after the game that Rooney could be out for three weeks.

“We had long periods of the game, but couldn’t score. Apart from the lapse in concentration for their goal, we played well.

“We got two or three opportunities but it was unfortunate we didn’t take them.”

The game was preceded by a minute’s applause for the late Bill Shankly, who would have turned 100 on Monday, and the legendary former Liverpool manager would have appreciated his side’s purposeful start.

There were less than four minutes on the clock when Liverpool struck, with Sturridge stepping off the line to glance Daniel Agger’s header past David de Gea and mark his 24th birthday with an 11th goal in nine games.

Initially, United struggled to react, and Robin van Persie’s frustration told late in the half when he was booked for flying in on Daniel Agger before angrily clashing with Martin Skrtel.

United also lost Phil Jones to an apparent ankle injury before half-time, but there was a renewed determination to their play in the second period.

Ashley Young had a volley blocked by Glen Johnson and Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had to field a Ryan Giggs header before parrying a rasping shot from substitute Nani.

Johnson hobbled off for Liverpool after hurting himself in a block tackle but the hosts survived, with Van Persie spurning a good late chance by slashing wide of the near post in the 87th minute.

In the day’s other lunchtime game, Swansea City recorded their first victory of the season with a 2-0 success at West Bromwich Albion.

The home side recalled Nicolas Anelka after he was granted compassionate leave due to the death of a close friend, but they lost to a 22nd-minute Ben Davies volley and a late Pablo Hernandez strike.

44 killed by gunmen in mosque

Gunmen have killed 44 people inside a mosque, in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, officials say.

The killings took place during dawn prayers on Sunday morning, although news only emerged on Monday. The attack occurred in Konduga in Borno state, 35km (22 miles) from the state capital Maiduguri.

About 26 people were also injured. They were receiving treatment in Maiduguri.

It was not clear who was responsible for the shootings.

But the Boko Haram militants remain the chief suspects.

The Islamist group Boko Haram has killed thousands in northern Nigeria since 2009.

A member of a civilian vigilante group told the Associated Press that four of their number were killed when they responded to calls for help.

Twelve further civilians were killed at Ngom village, closer to Maiduguri, reports say.

Army arrests 42 Boko Haram members

Nigerian Army, yesterday, in Lagos, paraded 42 suspected members of Boko Haram sect arrested in their hideouts in Lagos and Ogun states.

Some of the paraded suspects confessed to have killed soldiers and civilians in the northern parts of the country.

They also confessed to have fled Borno State for the western part of the country following the ongoing military intervention.

Parading the suspects before newsmen, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Obi Umahi, stated that the suspects were arrested following intelligence report on the migration of some members of the sect to the South, from the operation’s commander in the South-Eastern part of the country.

He said based on this information at the division’s disposal, a coordinated raid was carried out in some criminal hideouts in both states.

He said: “The Command organised and carried out raids in conjunction with intelligence operatives in various parts of these states.

“The Boko Haram members’ influx is adduced to plans to unleash terror in some parts of South-West, which includes 81 Division’s area of responsibility.

“The raids were conducted from 12 to 23 July in various hideouts in Lagos and Ogun states, which are fast becoming Boko Haram enclaves.

“The raids were conducted in Ibafo trailer parks and Ileke new trailer garage in Ogun State; Aviation quarters, Mafoluku Oshodi, Ketu/Mile 12 motor parks, Orile trailer park, Lekki new extension and Bar Beach in Lagos State, where 42 suspects were arrested.

“They all admitted to be members of the sect and also said they had participated in some deadly Boko Haram operations.
