Robin van Persie bagged a brace as the Netherlands

Manchester United star Robin van Persie bagged a brace as the Netherlands continued their march to Brazil in thrashing Romania 4-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA.

In so doing van Persie reached 34 international goals, bettering the haul of 33 goals in 48 caps by the legendary Johan Cruyff. Van Persie is now just six goals shy of Patrick Kluivert’s all-time goal record for the Oranje.

“Van Persie was very unlucky in the first half but in the second half he was actually very happy, because he made an incredible world-class goal,” boss Van Gaal was quoted as saying by Voetbal International.

“It was a ball that he could barely head, but he deliberately hit it into the top corner. And he also put the penalty well inside [the goal]. He was also a great target man, as you saw in his first goal.

Rafael van der Vaart scored the opener and Jeremain Lens added gloss in the last minute as the Dutch stretched their perfect record to six matches, and their lead at the top of qualifying Group D to seven points.

The Netherlands need just two more wins from their final four matches to ensure their passge to the finals in Brazil next year.
